Introduction to Moving Image

Film - The Perks of Being A Wallflower

The lighting within this scene makes Sam's character look more of a silhouette, since we aren't able to see her clearly. The scene included the characters listening to David Bowie's Heroes - hence why Sam is letting the wind hit her, as the song makes her feel free. I think by the lighting being low key and us only being able to see a silhouette, lets the audience identify with the character and how she feels in the moment. The lighting is natural, produced by the streetlights, car lights and the lights upon the bridge to reflect the time of day. While the scene is quite dark, which normally would connotate something negative - the scene is actually very positive, as it reflects the mood of the characters just living in the moment.

Film - Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back

The lighting in this scene hides both of the characters identities - but since Darth Vader is an iconic character within film, we are easily able to detect his silhouette. Since the lighting in this scene hides both characters, it emphasises the light in which is their lightsabers - which then emphasises the dramatic side of the scene since they are about to duel. The orange lighting used at the very bottom of the screen I believe was done deliberately as orange is known to connotate determination and enthusiasm - which this scene is all about. We aren't able to see any shadow in this scene, as it's almost a low angle shot - connotating being strong and powerful.

Film - Avengers Endgame

The lowkey lighting in this scene of the film reveals everything in the shot - almost reflecting onto Tony Stark's character at this point and how he is stranded all alone and has nothing to hide. Furthermore, the almost cyan coloured lighting is natural as he and his ship are being illuminated by the outer light. While we can see him clearly, the lighting is quite dull which reflects upon the mood of the scene and how Tony feels in the moment - alone, stranded. By showing him in this light, it immediately makes the audience feel sympathy for the character.

Film - 1917

The lighting in this particular scene has been created through the use of the flames of the fire, therefore we are only able to see the silhouette of the character Lance Corporal Schofield. While the lighting does hide the character, we as the audience can already infer what their facial expressions, etc. would look like in this moment. The smoke around the screen as well as the orange colours from the flames creates quite a sinister mood, as well as sadness for the audience since the building continues to burn down before his eyes.

Film - Emma

The lighting in this clip is artificial and quite lowkey, as we can see a slight shadow on the character Emma's face. It has been used so that it reveals the two main characters quite clearly, while the background is blurred due to camera focusing. The lighting emphasises both characters facial expressions and outfits, while creating quit a chilled, calm mood - along with the beige coloured background.
