Research

I asked people within my age range if they do or don't collect records and why -

People who do -

  • 'I do mainly because my parents have a big collection from the 70s and 80s so they gave most of theirs to me and I got additional ones myself, but also because I love having music on a variety of different formats, and certain songs on vinyl just sound better'.
  • 'I do because I find them nostalgic in a sense, and almost helps me disconnect from reality'
  • 'I do since my dad got me into them, and I just like having a physical copy of my favourite albums'.
  • 'I collect them because I like to have a physical copy of an album, plus getting posters and little extras with them make it even better'.
  • 'I like to have a physical copy of music and something you can hold or display instead of jut a download on your phone'.
People who don't -
  • 'I want to but I don't have the money'
  • 'I don't since I don't have the room to store a record player and the records'
  • 'I've never thought about buying them because of how quickly you can stream music on your phone'
  • 'I don't because they seem expensive'.
In conclusion, people within my age group tend to collect records due to family members passing their collection down, and just because they prefer to have a physical album rather than a simple download onto their device. Whereas people who don't tend to not have the money to buy them, as well as the room t store them. I originally expected more people to say no due to how easily accessible music is nowadays due to streaming platforms, but was surprised to find out more people do collect them than those who don't.

I then asked ten classmates the same question, and found out more people said they don't rather than they do collect them -

To those who said they don't collect, their reasonings were that they'd rather use Spotify, they don't own a record player, they wouldn't know where to buy records and that it just doesn't interest them.

Those of who said they do collect collectively said a parent or family member got them into it and prefer a physical copy.

Vinyl Revival

The vinyl revival is the renewed interest and increased sales of vinyl records that has been taking place in the Western world since around 2007. Vinyl had been the main source of listening to music from the 1950s until the 1980s/90s when they were largely replaced by the compact disk (CDs). Since the turn of the millennium, CDs have been somewhat replaced by digital downloads and platforms like Spotify, Apple music, etc. However in 2007, vinyl sales made a sudden small increase and by the early 2010s it was growing at a fast rate. In certain places, vinyl is now more popular  than it has been since the late 1980s.
