Refine your Idea

Interviews

I asked lead singer Tom Rees of band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard some questions as I thought it would be good to see the topic from the point of view of someone who works within the music industry -

Do you collect records and why?
'I have previously however I do less so now as my turntable has been broken for a number of years, something I haven't gotten round to fixing unfortunately! In an ideal world, if money was no object, I would own every record I hold dear on vinyl, which is quite a few!'

How does having things like social media benefit you as a band?
'I think social media throws in a lot of unnecessary pressures into being a band, but ultimately it is quite beneficial in the ways that you can make contact with fans. It makes it much easier to create meaningful experiences for fans, which is the primary goal for us as artists I feel. I just want the fans to feel connected to us and have something meaningful to take away from the music to influence their lives.'

Without social media, how do you think you would promote your music?
'I think my dad would have a lot to say about this (he used to try and get me to post flyers and business cards through peoples doors when I was in my first band), but I think it would be a lot like the old days, just play great shows! We put a lot of emphasis on that anyway, but I think we'd pump much more effort into that if social media went bust.'

Questions

I asked my class if they collect records and why -
  • no because I have Spotify and it's cheaper
  • no because I don't own a record player
  • no because they're expensive
  • yes because my dad got me into them
  • no because I'm not interested in them
I then asked my friends the same question -
  • yes because music sounds better on vinyl
  • yes sine my parents got me into them
  • yes since it's a physical way of showing my favourite music
  • yes because I find them nostalgic
  • no, I have no room to store them
  • no, they're too expensive

This shows how results can never be exactly accurate since the majority of my friends do collect records, but then the majority of my class don't - it just depends on the audience you're asking and their individual interests.

Locations

I am taking mainly all of my footage for the documentary from online, such as clips from archives from when records were first introduced, clips of bands being mentioned, and more. The only footage I will be taking myself will take place in my house, when I use clips showing my own records.
