Cinematography Techniques - An analysis of The Shining

Throughout the majority of the clip, director Stanley Kubrick used a ground level angle shot to capture the character Danny on his bike, riding the hallways of the hotel. I think the director chose to use a ground level shot to show the audience Danny's perspective. The effect this then has on the audience is that it makes us feel more involved, getting to see things from a characters view point.  Furthermore, in this screen cap and for a lot of the scene, it's in deep focus - meaning everything in the shot is in focus so we as the audience can pick up every small detail. I think, in this case, the effect it has on the audience is that again it makes us feel more involved, letting us explore the scene and atmosphere in detail at the same time the character involved does. Next, the frame used throughout the scene is a single frame - as Danny is the only character involved. This immediately make us focus on him, while perhaps creating a sense of dread for the audience since he...

Refine your Idea

Interviews I asked lead singer Tom Rees of band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard some questions as I thought it would be good to see the topic from the point of view of someone who works within the music industry -  Do you collect records and why? ' I have previously however I do less so now as my turntable has been broken for a number of years, something I haven't gotten round to fixing unfortunately! In an ideal world, if money was no object, I would own every record I hold dear on vinyl, which is quite a few! ' How does having things like social media benefit you as a band? It makes it much easier to create meaningful experiences for fans, which is the primary goal for us as artists I feel. I just want the fans to feel connected to us and have something meaningful to take away from the music to influence the...

Test Footage

https://youtu.be/03G839ljIN0   In this short clip I wanted to present the records I would be mentioning in the voiceover stacking upon each other while in the same shot. While this doesn’t necessarily sound difficult, using my phone to film made it that way. I tried leaning it against things, etc. but I felt nothing worked.  I also wrote a short piece on Record Stores in particular discussing local stores and where I personally buy my own records from to help people out. Upon filming, we were put back into a lockdown so I had to leave this part out - luckily my script reached the five minute mark but I would’ve liked to include this.  As well as this, before editing we were given a list of different softwares that would work as an equivalent to Premiere Pro. After testing some of these out on my laptop, I ended up using iMovie since some of them wouldn’t download and others I didn’t feel very comfortable using.
