Foley Project - Project Plan and Research

 Describe your project -

The purpose of the project is to choose an appropriate clip to then recreate all the sounds used within it. What I hope to achieve is that by Christmas I have edited the clip so that all the sounds used were made / chose by me and also add in some sounds that I think would fit that aren't already in the original video. Furthermore, my project is mainly for entertainment purposes.

Who is your target audience, and how do you hope to meet their needs through your sound design?

When making my project, I need to consider the audience and their needs. I believe my target audience would be both men and women, perhaps as young as 13 or 14, up to people in their early twenties. While there is no dialogue in my film, I think just through the sounds used the story is easy to follow and is told quite well.

What constraints do you anticipate throughout the project, and how do you hope to overcome these?

When working on my project, i don't think time management should be a problem as I believe I am able to create the sounds needed quite quickly, therefore I will have enough time to edit them all together and add them into the clips. I also don't think material and resources should be much of a constraint as I am able to take the clips straight from youtube and edit them on the college software. One constraint may be the platform we are using to edit, as I have never worked with editing sounds before.

How do you hope to source the materials required for the project, and where has your research into this led you?

I found the film I will be using on YouTube, so I'm able to take the clips straight from there (https://youtu.be/UOS5CP8tzYQ). The BBC have also made sounds available that are free to use, so I may be using sounds sourced from there (http://bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk). Lastly, since this is a foley project, i will be creating most of the sounds myself, such as the sound of paper being folded, footsteps, etc.

Please provide three examples of your research into three other existing projects similar to your own, and your analysis of these examples

Dolby Presents: Silent, a Short Film ( https://youtu.be/KA6azZALMiE )

Like the film I've chosen, Paperman, this film consists just of sounds and no dialogue, therefore telling a story through the characters actions, facial expressions and sound effects. The video follows what appears to be a father and daughter, trying to make money on the street by entertaining people, and basically just following their dreams. The video ends on a high note with the duo performing in front of a crowded audience, juxtaposing where they were in the beginning and showing how far they had come. The impact this has on the audience is that it's quite heartwarming since in just under three minutes we follow the journey of two characters just through the use of sound. The black and white filter fits the theme well since the first shot showed the audience the two characters almost showing their own cinema / theatre outdoors, inferring the time period and how perhaps they were then most popular. The repetition used in this short film is also used in my chosen film, since in both it starts with the two main characters on a lower note, then ends with both characters on a more higher note. For the audience reception, audience members may feel a sense of personal identification with the film since it resembles people working hard and it paying off.

In A Heartbeat, a short film ( https://youtu.be/2REkk9SCRn0 ) by Beth David + Esteban Bravo

Again like Paperman, In A Heartbeat is told through music, sounds and facial expressions - no dialogue. The film follows two characters brought together by a heart - their love. The theme is quite similar to my chosen film since they both are based around a bond between two people, which helps with my research as they both have the same impact on the audience - again a heartwarming feeling. As well as Paperman, this short film uses a background track made up of piano and other elements, which creates quite a soft tone to the film. Unlike others, this film doesn't involve much repetition, but it does end on a high note which I can take inspiration from. I think people may watch and enjoy this film for personal identification purposes, as they may see themselves in the characters shown. As well as this, just for entertainment purposes since it's a nice film with a warm message so it could be enjoyed by anyone.

Hair Love, a short film by Sony Pictures Animation ( https://youtu.be/kNw8V_Fkw28 )

Once again, this short film doesn't use any dialogue so the story is told through the characters involved, the setting, props, etc. It follows a dad and his daughter trying to do a task which the mam used to do, but is currently ill. While it is very different to Paperman, this film starts quite down and dull, then towards the end becomes happy and positive. I think the purpose of this film was to showcase a message of remaining strong throughout the tougher times, which I'm sure people will be able to relate to. As well as this, it's representing those with the same hair type ( which the film is all about ) which lets those identify with the character and perhaps the situation.
