Documentary evaluation

What did you do to a high standard? I think I completed the majority of my planning to a high standard - but I do think I could go back and  improve/ add more detail to some posts. As well as this I think my documentary turned out to be a high standard, but again I think there’s a lot I can improve on.  Why did you struggle during the assessment period? There were parts of my documentary I struggled to find footage for but in the end I think that was okay as I could improvise. I think the editing process went okay as around this time last year during the first lockdown, I ended up editing a short film using iMovie as I felt it was the software I felt most comfortable using. I think what helped with this project is that it was on a topic I enjoy and am passionate about. Therefore while being in lockdown and feeling like I have felt less motivated, I was still able to work through and complete my documentary as it's topic is something I enjoy.  What have you learnt from thi...

Digital Age Documentary Diary

November 18th 2020 In this week, I have just about completed my diagram showing ideas that I could include in my documentary, such as the history of vinyl, peoples opinions on it and the statistics. After competing my diagram, I have began my powerpoint to showcase my idea ready for next week.  November 23rd 2020 I updated my blogger so everything was easier to find, then watched some short documentaries which are similar to mine. After watching those I analysed them and explained how they can help me in making mine. I then uploaded my diagram to blogger and began my post on research. I noted down my research into why people do and don't collect vinyl, then also spoke about the vinyl revival. I then need to continue my powerpoint presentation to showcase my idea in more depth.  November 30th 2020 I completed my powerpoint, and created a survey and am still receiving feedback. I completed more research and explained what my documentary would consist of. I need to get more feedb...

My documentary and questions

Image
How was the documentary effective? I think my documentary was effective as it fit the brief we were given. I also think all of the footage used, as well as the audio, worked well and I achieved what was asked.  Was the message clear? Personally I think the message is clear and got across to the audience. After opening up my documentary and explaining it's topic, I branched off into its smaller topics and things relating to it, so I think overall I was clear in what I was explaining.  How could I improve the finished product? After getting feedback, I have since added music and credits to make I more realistic as a documentary. I think if I were to improve it further I could add in an extra sequence on record stores - I planned to do this but decided to leave it out due to filming locations and Covid restrictions.  How will I carry across the skills I have gained during the process to my next production? I think I will carry the skills I have gained to my next production i...

Equipment list

Resource list from EmmaWallace23 I tested several video software's on my laptop to see which one would suit me best but there were a few I didn't feel comfortable using. The one's I did either wouldn't download, or wouldn't work properly. In the end, I ended up recording and collecting clips on my phone, and editing them in iMovie, since in March last year in our first lockdown I was also editing a short film and found it easier and more understanding than most software. Also I knew that if I used iMovie I would be comfortable doing the work and should be able to complete it in the time frame were given.

Documentary proto-type

After recording my footage which would go in the documentary, I put three short clips into iMovie to see which ways they could be edited together. I think a disadvantage with using iMovie is that there aren't many effects like different transitions, only a hand full. I decided after this that when I come to making my documentary I would use no transitions between clips and just let them cut together.  There is a section is my script where I feature the artists Sam Fender, Harry Styles, The Stone Roses and Nirvana therefore I wanted to include individual clips of them all to further the point being made. Again in this clip I used transitions between each of them but I think when I come to edit my documentary I will choose not to use them.

Test Footage

https://youtu.be/03G839ljIN0   In this short clip I wanted to present the records I would be mentioning in the voiceover stacking upon each other while in the same shot. While this doesn’t necessarily sound difficult, using my phone to film made it that way. I tried leaning it against things, etc. but I felt nothing worked.  I also wrote a short piece on Record Stores in particular discussing local stores and where I personally buy my own records from to help people out. Upon filming, we were put back into a lockdown so I had to leave this part out - luckily my script reached the five minute mark but I would’ve liked to include this.  As well as this, before editing we were given a list of different softwares that would work as an equivalent to Premiere Pro. After testing some of these out on my laptop, I ended up using iMovie since some of them wouldn’t download and others I didn’t feel very comfortable using.

Pre production - Shooting Schedule (tv and print advert)

My TV advert was originally going to include my friend, but due to Coronavirus measures and lockdown rules that is no longer possible. Therefore, my shooting schedule is now more flexible. I planned to have all of my pre production complete by now therefore I could have been able to film this week, but I've had to change some ideas around so that I'm able to complete this brief from home.  I am spending this week's sessions looking through my pre production and making sure it's up to date, so that I am able to hopefully film my new idea next week. I aim to have my advert filmed by January 13th / 14th, giving myself a week to edit it all together together for the 22nd.  As well as this, along side my TV advert I am now creating a print advert as I think being lockdown this may be easier to create and I would like to put in just as much effort.

Proposal for my Documentary

I am creating a documentary based around culture in the digital age, which will focus specifically on vinyl culture and how it's changed over the years. My documentary will begin talking about the digital age, then will move onto vinyl records and their history. After going into detail on things like how they were made, and more, I will go onto explain the shift in devices over the years - cassette tapes, cd's, etc.  Next, I will talk about vinyl records in the todays age, and the different reasons people do and don't collect them. Then, onto statistics on current record sales, and the differences in those numbers over the years, mentioning some specific artists to get my point across.  My answers from singer Tom Rees come next as I was able to ask him some questions on his opinion of the matter, soon finishing off with a short word on my opinion of vinyl in this day and age.  I will include footage taken from online, such as things like videos from when things like vinyl...

Location and Risk Assessment

Location scouting template (recce) complete 2 from EmmaWallace23 Risk assessment template from EmmaWallace23 I haven't filled out the second form of the risk assessment as the only filming I am doing myself involves filming my records, therefore I will be indoors at all times and there will be no risks.
