Refine your Idea

Image
Interviews I asked lead singer Tom Rees of band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard some questions as I thought it would be good to see the topic from the point of view of someone who works within the music industry -  Do you collect records and why? ' I have previously however I do less so now as my turntable has been broken for a number of years, something I haven't gotten round to fixing unfortunately! In an ideal world, if money was no object, I would own every record I hold dear on vinyl, which is quite a few! ' How does having things like social media benefit you as a band? ' I think social media throws in a lot of unnecessary pressures into being a band, but ultimately it is quite beneficial in the ways that you can make contact with fans. It makes it much easier to create meaningful experiences for fans, which is the primary goal for us as artists I feel. I just want the fans to feel connected to us and have something meaningful to take away from the music to influence the...

Meeting the Brief

How does my idea meet the brief? The brief asks us to explore and develop ideas for media products or visual art and design work relating to the theme of 'Culture in the Digital Age', capturing the culture of young people. Therefore, I believe my idea fits the brief since my idea is to create a documentary on the culture of vinyl and how the digital age has affected things like the sales, their popularity, etc. I think it captures the culture of young people well since when receiving feedback on the topic, a lot of my target audience do have an interest or collect vinyl themselves. While my idea won't appeal to all young people since the topic is something some people won't take an interest in, I think it captures the culture of those who do have an interest in the topic quite well.  The aim of the documentary is to engage and encourage young people to think about the impact of the digital age on modern society. I think my documentary meets this brief as I believe it w...

Rationale Pitch Feedback

Upon completing my rationale for my project, I shared it between three friends to get back different opinions. We did this so we were able to see different viewpoints and to see if there were any improvements we could make. As well as this, it let me see the positives and negatives in what I had presented. After sharing my rationale pitch between friends, this was the feedback collected: Does this fit the brief? How? "Yes, I think both the TV and print ad fit the brief as they both will have a positive effect on teenagers" "Yes, the brief is to make adverts which would appeal to teens, which I believe this brief does since music is something most teenagers have an interest in" "Yes, I think it will have a positive outcome which would reflect onto peoples mental health" Does it offer something new and original? "I think so yeah" "Yes just I don't think I've seen a mental health advert that talks about the effect of music" "Y...

Analysing and Evaluating

Image
After identifying the client and their needs in the brief, as well as researching some statistics on mental health in 2020 and the effects of smiling, I went on to research some charities / wellbeing campaigns and adverts.  I think when looking at charity adverts, we expect to see real footage showing what the charity focuses on. For example on a Save The Children advert we expect to see the charity showing children requiring help, or in a RSPCA advert we expect to see animals.  In this advert for Save The Children, it focuses on a young girl fighting for her future. It talks upon stereotypes and first impressions, but it's main aim is to see the world from her perspective. In each clip, she is shown in the same position, at the centre in a mid shot, showing how she is the key signifier and is representing all of the children at the centre of the topics mentioned ( a child soldier, a child bride, etc. ). When focusing on the mise-en-scene, what makes up this video is the use ...

Chosen Idea

The idea I have chosen to make a documentary on is how vinyl has been affected by the digital age. The points I will include from my mind map are the history of the topic, different opinions on vinyl, statistics and just one interview.  I have decided to create a documentary on this topic since I believe it fits the brief well and would appeal to my target audience and perhaps show them a different viewpoint on the matter. The brief asked me to explore and develop ideas for media products or visual art, and design work relating to the theme of 'Culture in the Digital Age'. I think my idea fits well as I will explore how the shift in technology made vinyl sales drop due to CD's, streaming platforms, etc. My target audience for this project are both men and women from the ages 13 up to 19. I think my idea would appeal to this age range in different ways - perhaps to the younger end as more as an informational documentary because it might be something they've never looked ...

Research

I asked people within my age range if they do or don't collect records and why -  People who do -  'I do mainly because my parents have a big collection from the 70s and 80s so they gave most of theirs to me and I got additional ones myself, but also because I love having music on a variety of different formats, and certain songs on vinyl just sound better'. 'I do because I find them nostalgic in a sense, and almost helps me disconnect from reality'  'I do since my dad got me into them, and I just like having a physical copy of my favourite albums'.  'I collect them because I like to have a physical copy of an album, plus getting posters and little extras with them make it even better'.  'I like to have a physical copy of music and something you can hold or display instead of jut a download on your phone'.  People who don't -  'I want to but I don't have the money' 'I don't since I don't have the room to store a r...
